Jason Schadewalt founded Addi Cakes in his hometown of Freeport,Illinois toward the end of 2010, a year when he was laid off his job working as an equipment operator. It was also in the same year that his father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
For four months in 2010, Schadewalt worked on and off until he was finally laid off. Seeking some sort of comfort, Schadewalt turned to baking, an area where he had always felt comfortable. Having spent so much time in the kitchen, Schadewalt discovered that he actually had hidden talents in baking. In December of that year, Schadewalt decided to participate in a Christmas Bazaar that was held in his hometown. He sold cupcakes in the bazaar, hoping to earn enough to pay the bills, and to buy a Christmas present for his daughter Addison.
It was a surprise for Schadewalt when his cupcakes were a big hit in the bazaar. After receiving overwhelming positive feedback, Schadewalt decided to create the business and Addi Cakes was born. Schadewalt named the business after his and his wife’s daughter, Addison. That Christmas, Schadewalt and his wife began to receive a number of orders. With him as lead baker and lead decorator and his wife being the assistant decorator, Addi Cakes began supplying cupcakes for customer orders.
Soon Addi Cakes not only offered cupcakes, but cakes and other specialty items. Although the business started slow, Addi Cakes is now starting to gain popularity in Freeport due to their delicious tasting cakes and cupcakes. The business grew in popularity by word of mouth. To promote the business further, Addi Cakes now has its own website, as well as a Facebook page.
Today, Addi Cakes remains an “order-only” bakery business, catering primarily to customer orders in and around Freeport,Illinois. Addi Cakes accepts custom orders for cupcakes, cakes and other specialty bakery products.
