Andronico’s Market is a family owned grocery chain located primarily in California. In 1929, founder, Frank Andronico, a native from Greece, opened the first market in Berkeley, California. Market is a chain of supermarkets in the Northern part of California
Andronico’s provides services typically to premium customers. Andronico’s also caters to the gourmet buyer and it offers a wide variety of uncommon produce and typical items that are hard to find in a regular market. They have European style bakeries and health item sections inside their stores. The community feels connected with the store because of staff friendliness. Andronico’s decided to change their name and developed a contest. With customer participation the winner was “Park and Shop Market.”
Despite the slow growth of the business during the first 30 years, another Park and Shop Market opened in 1957. John Andronico, Frank’s son, joined the family company. In 1959, a third store grand opening launched the San Francisco store. Bill, John’s son, began working at the family business after he graduated with a degree in Economics and began working fulltime in 1980s.
In 1986 during the remodeling of the second Berkeley store, the name was changed to Andronico’s Park and Shop Market to distinguish themselves from other markets. The company began to blossom, opening more stores. In the 1990s Andronico’s introduced prepared meals at some of their locations and they became popular for busy families.
In 1997 after the opening of the seventh store the company changed its name to Andronico’s Market, Inc. Thereafter there were two other stores. The ninth store in the East Bay was opened in 1999 and it had a widespread supply of fine wine with a wine-tasting bar, an in-house bakery, a kitchen utilized to host cooking classes and private gatherings.
In the 2000s the sales figures did not show great growth. Despite of all the obstacles, the company continued gaining recognition. Andronico’s received various awards throughout the years from Specialty Food trade’s Retailer of the year to the Retail Leadership Award.
