Bunge Limited is a multinational food conglomerate headquartered in New York, USA. Although its primary area of business is in the exportation of soybeans, the company is also engaged in grain trading, fertilizer production, biofuel production and food processing.
Bunge was founded in 1818 by Johann Peter Gotlieb Bunge in Amsterdam. Edouard Bounge relocated the company to Antwerp in 1859. The company entered into Argentina’s market in the year 1884 and extended its business to Brazil in 1905.
After a few years of conflicts between the company’s owners and leaders, Bunge International came into existence in 1994 with a total of 180 shareholders. Most of the shares were owned by the Hirsch, Born, De La Tour, Bunge, and Engels families. In the year 2001, Bunge became a public company engaged in the food, agribusiness and fertilizer industries. The company was able to establish global leadership in the area of farm-to-consumer direct food services. The company has also become the world’s largest processor of oilseed, as well as a leading seller of retail vegetable oil.
In 2008, Bunge was able to acquire German margarine company Walter Rau. A year after, Bunge also acquired margarine company Raisio Group from Central Europe. Bunge’s acquisition of these two companies strengthened its resolve to establish leadership in the area of producing consumer margarines.
Currently, Bunge still continues to operate in the four industries in which it has established an international customer base. Its agriculture division is involved in the processing, storage, transport, sale and purchase of both agricultural products and commodities. Its bioenergy and sugar division is involved in the production and sale of both ethanol and sugar to Brazil. It also provides biofuel from the bagasse that it gets from its raw sugarcane materials.
Bunge food ingredient division is involved in the production of milling products and edible oil. The same division is also engaged in the sale of edible oils, margarines, shortenings, mayonnaise, wheat flour, rice and corn-based products. The company’s fertilizer division is involved in the production, blending and distribution of fertilizers to agricultural businesses of South America.
Bunge Limited currently operates in more than 30 countries all around the world. Its two main competitors currently are Archer Daniels Midland and Cargill.
