Ottawa, Canada-based Enerjive is the latest company to join the Quinoa trend with its introduction of Quinoa Skinny Crackers. While not the first to introduce quinoa into its products, Enerjive is one of the first to use it in cracker form. The crackers are designed to appeal to those seeking gluten-free snack options that are also low in sugar and sodium. Moreover, according to the company, the crackers help maintain hormonal and energy balance throughout the day, which assists with optimizing metabolism, boosting energy and reducing cravings.
“There’s never been a cracker like this before,” said Korey Kealey, president and co-creator. The product is offered in five flavors: Chocolate Fix, Cozy Apple Cinnamon, Garlic Cayenne Heat, Lemon Berry Burst and Rock Salt Crave. Each serving contains 90 calories or less. Distribution is currently limited to Canada, with plans to expand to the States later in 2013.
Over the past 5 years, Quinoa has grown increasingly popular for being a versatile, nutrient-rich, gluten-free grain (actually a seed) that can serve as an alternative source of complete protein, fiber, and other essential vitamins and minerals. The United Nations declared 2013 as “The International Year of the Quinoa” to recognize the Andean indigenous people who have maintained, controlled, protected and preserved quinoa as a food.
Enerjive was founded by Kealy along with Dr. Joel Villeneuve with the intention of introducing tasty snack options for those with a gluten intolerance or anyone seeking a healthy alternative to snack crackers.
