Low Prices Rule at Winn Dixie

Winn-Dixie has built their reputation on great tasting meats and seafood. In fact, they have been known as “The Beef People” for 80 years. It is what they do best, according to their website WinnDixie.com. Winn-Dixie controls 1% of the retail grocery market and is one of the largest retailers of the Southeast, along with Publix.

About Winn Dixie

Winn Dixie began in Burley, Idaho, when a man named William Davis started a general store in 1914. The store fell under because the new, bigger stores offered a wider selection. So, William Davis borrowed $10,000 from his father, moved to Miami, FL, and purchased Rockmoor Grocery. At first, Davis named his store Table Supply. By 1931, Davis had a chain of 33 Table Supply Stores across Florida. When William Milton Davis died in 1934, he left the company to his four sons. Afterwards, the brothers bought 51% of Winn-Lovett, which was a chain of 73 stores. In 1952, Winn-Lovett was the first industrial company created in Florida to be registered on the New York Stock Exchange.
