Founder Tom Morris created home Bargains in 1976. He opened the first Home Bargains store in the area of Old Swan, in Liverpool. Prior to opening this first shop, Morris already had considerable experience in the area of retail, as his family was operating shops for more than two generations. Originally, the stores were named Home and Bargain. However, in the later part of the 1990s, the stores’ name became what it is now.
Over the years, its sky blue and red branding has identified the stores. The stores were usually located in the primary shopping streets and in arcades and shopping centres. Majority of the stores were located at the heart of the city, however, there were some located out-of-town, in retail parks. The stores were either small or medium outlets, with most of them having a one-way system, meaning shoppers would go in on one door and exit via another.
In August of 2007, Home Bargains opened two stores in the area of South Wales (specifically Caerphilly and Barry). The location of the stores were previously owned by Netto, but were abandoned, along with Netto’s plans for expansion in the area. In 2008, Home Bargains was able to purchase several Kwik Save stores and converted them to new Home Bargains stores. In October of 2007, the company announced that it was preparing to expand to Scotland. In December of the same year, the first Home Bargains store was opened in Scotland, one that was located in Rutherglen. In March of 2009, the company announced its plans to put up six stores in the area of Glasgow. Also in 2009, the company bought 14 stores that were previously Woolworths stores. In February of 2010, its expansion to Northern Ireland was announced.
Currently, plans for expansion continue, as the company plans to grow the number of Home Bargains stores 600 by 2015. Today, there are about 250 Home Bargains stores in different parts of theUK. It is likely that the company will achieve their goal, as the stores have exhibited a strong growth in sales over recent years.
