Your Independent Grocer is a chain of Canadian supermarkets based primarily in the Ontario province. The supermarket chain is a subsidiary of the Loblaw Companies, Limited and is headquartered in Brampton, Ontario, like the rest of its sister grocery chains.
Your Independent Grocer is a member the National Grocers’ Network. This organization is a group of supermarket retailers in the whole of Canada. Much of this supermarket’s history is linked to that of the National Grocer’s history.
In 1925, the National Grocers’ network completed its first Northern Ontario warehouse. This facility combined the distribution structures of 34 wholesale grocers, which served to lessen the duplication of distributed products in the stores of Northern Ontario. By 1929, most of the members of the National Grocers’ network already enjoyed growth and expansion. This was the time when several grocery stores were created, mostly by franchise owners and smaller merchants. Among the stores that were created during the period were Maple Leaf Stores, Lucky Dollar and Red & White stores.
In the 1950’s, SuperSave Markets were created, primarily because a number of large operators all throughout Ontario wanted to have a group that would enable them to pool both advertising efforts and buying power. In the 1960s, the National Grocers’ network became a subsidiary of the George Weston Group. Later on, it then became a subsidiary of Loblaw Companies, Ltd. It was also during this time that the Ok Economy Supermarkets were launched.
By the 1980s, Freshmart and Valu-Mart franchise stores were introduced. These stores served communities in rural areas, as well as provided freshness and quality in conventional department stores.
It was during the 1990s that Your Independent Grocer stores were introduced to the Canadian market. These stores were mostly franchise-owned and provided shoppers with a convenient one-stop shop experience. Soon, the store offerings were not limited only to groceries; it also started to offer seasonal items, magazines, health & beauty care products, and outdoor furniture.
Currently, Your Independent Grocer is operating about fifty, one-stop shop supermarkets in all of Ontario. Most of these locations are in the northern part of the province, as well as in Ottawa and Sudbury. Your Independent Grocer stores now offer many different services, such as a drycleaner station, a photo lab, a flower market, a pharmacy, free daily banking and a lot more services that are useful to consumers.
