fastfoodburgerfrieseatingA recent study by the American Journal for Preventive Medicine shows that most of the fast food restaurants in America have made very little progress with regard to creating better and healthier menus. Although most of the fast food joints have added more fruits, vegetables and salads to their menus, the comparative amount of unhealthy food options have also increased. This means that the overall nutritional quality and calorie content of their foods has remained relatively constant over the years.

These findings show a very worrying trend because over 25% of Americans eat fast foods at least twice a week. These foods are usually filled with refined sugar, fat and salt. These are not healthy for the human body.

The research also found that the number of items offered in the menu for lunch and dinner increased by over 53% within the last ten years. A close look into the specific food items in the menu revealed that the median energy content of the deserts and the condiments increased. The energy content of the sides rose and the energy content of the entrees and drinks remained the same.

Although it was noted that most of the restaurants in America never improved the nutritional content of their menus, there are some restaurants that saw an improvement of the nutritional content in their menus. Examples of restaurants in this category include Jack in the Box and the Kentucky Fried chicken. These restaurants offer more protein and more grain options for their customers. This, in the long run reduced the overall amount of sugar and fat that they offer their customers. Other restaurants such as Burger King, offered little protein while increasing their amount of saturated fats, sodium, and sugar.
