United Supermarkets, operating under the banner The United Family, traces its roots to 1916, when H.D. Snell opened his first United Cash Store in Sayre, Oklahoma. This establishment introduced a cash-and-carry model, which eliminated credit sales and allowed customers to select and purchase goods directly, making groceries more accessible and affordable for rural communities. During the 1920s and 1930s, United Cash Stores expanded modestly within Oklahoma, navigating the economic turbulence of the Great Depression, with the company emphasizing affordable pricing on essential groceries to support struggling households. In 1949, H.D. “Jack” Snell Jr., purchased Vernon and Wellington grocery stores from his father. Jack introduced United to Lubbock in the 1950s, Wichita Falls in the 1960s and Amarillo in the 1970s.
In 1998, the company adopted a strategic growth plan creating new stores, innovative concepts, diverse market expansion, and self-distribution. That same year, Market Street was introduced in Wichita Falls, bringing a new concept focused on healthy meal solutions for busy guests. United Supermercado, which is now known as Amigos, was the next concept offered by The United Family, opening in Plainview in 2000, providing a blend of traditional and cultural favorites for Hispanic shoppers in the Lubbock and Amarillo areas. The United Family also purchased R.C. Taylor Distributing in 2007. On April 1, 2009, United opened its 50th store in Plano, Texas. On September 9, 2013, United Supermarkets LLC was sold to Albertsons LLC, and on February 4, 2014, the FTC voted 4–0 to approve the deal. The acquisition deal cost Albertsons $385 million and required Albertsons to sell its single stores in the Amarillo and Wichita Falls, Texas, markets. In 2013 United Supermarkets L.L.C. was bought by Albertsons L.L.C. and now operates as a separate, decentralized division of the Albertsons Company.
Operations & Footprint
With headquarters in Lubbock, Texas, the United Family operates throughout West Texas, the Texas Panhandle, and the Dallas–Fort Worth area, as well as in New Mexico. As part of the acquisition, several Albertsons locations in Eastern New Mexico were re-branded as “Albertsons Market”, and expansion in New Mexico continued with the purchase of several Lawrence Brothers locations, and the transfer of stores in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Rio Rancho, and Taos, to the United division.
The United Family operates multiple distinct retail banners: United Supermarket—traditional grocery offerings; Market Street—take-out foods, restaurants, gourmet, and everyday grocery items; Market Street Express—convenience store; Amigos United—international and American foods; United Express—take-out foods, café, and gas station; Albertsons Market—traditional American grocery; and Albertsons Market Express—convenience store. The company also operates United Food & Beverage Services, United Supermarkets Manufacturing, and Llano Logistics.
Products, Services & Merchandising
United Supermarkets represents the flagship banner, providing a comprehensive grocery experience centered on everyday essentials with an emphasis on value, selection, and personalized service. Stores feature wide aisles, in-house pharmacies, floral departments, and full-service meat and produce sections. Market Street locations provide a unique and inspiring shopping experience for guests who care about food and want a healthier lifestyle, offering access to the entire grocery list as well as specialty items, and featuring concierge, catering, floral and bakery services. Amigos stores provide a unique blend of traditional and cultural favorites for those who love authentic Mexican flavors.
The company operates loyalty and rewards programs that enable customers to earn points on grocery purchases and fuel discounts at partner stations. Online ordering with pickup and delivery options are available across most banners, along with prepared meal offerings and specialty services such as custom cakes and catering.
Work Environment & Employment
In 2003, United was named the inaugural winner of the Supermarket News “Community Service Award” for its innovative UCrew community volunteer teams. In 2001, the company was named winner of the Better Business Bureau’s “National Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics,” joining previous winners IBM, Sony Corporation, and Dollar General Stores in being recognized for ethical treatment of guests, employees and communities. The company has been on the Dallas Morning News’ “Top 100 Places to Work in DFW” list, and on Texas Monthly’s “Best Companies to Work for in Texas” list three times.
Business Model & Financial History
The United Family operates as a vertically integrated retailer with self-distribution capabilities. In addition to retail operations, the company operates R.C. Taylor Distributing, which it purchased in 2007, along with United Food & Beverage Services, United Supermarkets Manufacturing, and Llano Logistics. This structure has enabled the company to control its supply chain and develop private-label brands across its banners. United now operates as a separate, decentralized division of the Albertsons Company, maintaining independent decision-making while leveraging the broader resources of its parent organization.
Competitive Landscape
The United Family competes in regional markets across West Texas and New Mexico, areas characterized by lower population density and smaller urban centers. The company grew westward from stores close to the state’s Oklahoma border to Lubbock in the 1950s, to Wichita Falls in the 1960s and into Amarillo during the 1970s through a series of small acquisitions in each market, before expanding south to the suburbs of the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2003. The multi-banner strategy allows the company to serve different demographic segments and market niches within the same communities, reducing direct competition with itself while maximizing market penetration.
Recent Developments & Outlook
On Friday, October 14, Albertsons Companies, the parent company of The United Family, announced it has come to an agreement to merge with Kroger. Albertsons and Kroger operated as two separate companies until the deal was finalized in early 2024. The United Family has revealed plans to build a new United Supermarkets location and United Express convenience store/fuel station in Seminole, with construction scheduled to begin in late spring of 2026. The company continues to invest in store modernization and expansion while maintaining its commitment to local community engagement and service across its operational regions.
