From the studios of Media Films, a new documentary surrounding food and all the issues that relate to it has hit the market. A Place at the Table seeks to bring to light stories regarding poor families, their low standards of living and lack of proper nourishment. Through these stories, it displays the progressive growth of food insecurity and hunger over the decades.
Through and through the Media Films company has sought to raise awareness among the public about issues the majority is reluctant or are unaware of. Issues such as animal welfare and fast food have been the major stars in some of their previous works and so it comes as no wonder that A Place at the Table forces those who watch it to think critically about the food situation we are in currently.
The figures are appalling. In every six Americans, one of them is hungry and about 30% of families are unsure where their next meal will come from. If you are shaking you’re head wondering how the food situation in the country deteriorated at such a rate, the film explains that it all dates back to the Great Depression, the dark times of the 1930s. During the period after the great decline of the economy, emergency programs that were eventually abandoned supported farmers and then the market would be left to operate freely. However, things did not go as planned since large farms, as well as huge associations got to, and still are, benefiting from the solutions that were supposed to be temporary. Since then, times have witnessed funding being directed to military projects while the national food budget kept getting smaller and smaller.
As the stories of some of the characters unfold slowly, it becomes all the more clear how pathetic the situation is. We see a mother try to make ends meet and therefore has no healthy food options to choose from, and an eight-year-old obese girl who tells a clinical officer that she eats chips as snacks at home and is confused when the professional suggests that she should encourage her mom to buy apples. Many more storylines that are devastating are followed in the documentary, which is a must watch for all willing to witness the cold hard truth.
