Albertsons Market is a North American grocery company based in Boise, Idaho, with more than 240 supermarkets throughout the United States.
History
In 1939, Joe Albertson and partners L.S. Skaggs and Tom Cuthbert opened their first one-stop shopping market, which they named Albertson’s Food Center, in Boise, Idaho. By 1945, Joe Albertson incorporated the store and expanded it into Montana, Oregon, Utah and Washington, and the company eventually went public.
The Albertson’s chain moved into California in 1964 and purchased Greater All American Markets. It then partnered with Skaggs Drug Centers Inc. to open combination food-and-drug stores — a trend that continued until 1976, when the company started to build what is known today as “Superstores” that carry a broader line of products and services.
Between 1977 and 1979, Albertson’s and Skaggs dissolved their partnership, and Albertson’s began building a warehouse-style store for commercial and public use. It eventually established the first fully mechanized distribution center in Portland and began expanding at a rapid rate, acquiring 74 Jewel Osco food-and-drug stores in Arkansas, Florida, Oklahoma and Texas from American Stores Company in 1992. Seven years later, Albertson’s acquired Salk Lake City-based American Stores Company — which operated 288 combination stores, 514 supermarkets and 783 stand-alone drugstores — for $11.7 billion.
To gain Federal Trade Commission approval, the company agreed to divest 145 stores and four store sites in overlapping markets in California, Nevada and New Mexico. This was believed to be the largest retail-merger divestiture ever.
With everything going well, Albertson’s continued expanding, and in 2004 acquire the Shaw’s and Star Markets chains in New England for $2.5 billion. That year Albertson’s was the second largest operator of grocery stores in the United States, trailing only the Kroger Co. In overall food retailing it also trails Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the leader in that category.
Albertson’s operated more than 2,500 stores in 37 states. The retailing stores include about 1,350 combination food-and-drug stores and some 420 conventional supermarkets under the Albertsons, Acme Markets, Jewel Food Stores, Shaw’s, and Star Markets names. The company also operated two dozen warehouse stores (Max Foods and Super Saver Foods) and more than 700 stand-alone drugstores (Osco Drugs and Sav-on Drugs). More than 230 of the company’s stores also include onsite gasoline stations.
Succumbing to competition, Albertsons’s sold itself to SUPERVALU in 2006, and has continued to reduce in size. There are now about 220 stores left in the southern U.S.

What a surprise to find out that you have closed the game down! Three weeks ahead of SCHEDULE . What am I to do with the free game pieces that I have accumulated for the last several weeks? Good going Albertsons-another one of your serious problems your stores have.
NOT A HAPPY SHOPPER
My Address is 271 Hamilton road Livingston, Texas 77351. I am looking for your closest store.I am looking for your store brand Chili Beans in Sauce, or a web site where I could order then. 30 oz size cans. I know that they are no longer in the old Albertsons can. But a new Albertsons private label can. I would like 10/12 cans or maybe a case depending on how many cans come in a case. Thanks in advance. Phone number 818-416-1222

Stopped shopping at Fry’s when I had to buy 10 items to get sale prices and now at Albertson’s you have to buy 8. Thousands of snowbirds live in RV’s and dont have cupboard or frig space for multiple buying. Guess I’ll be grocery shopping at Walmart from now on.
I recently did some shopping at you pharmacy in the Albertson's store in Richland, Wa. It is located on gage Blvd.. The young lady that waited on me was a very gracious and accomadating. That lady alone would be one big reason I would that pharmacy. Man, she is a keeper!
Are the vegetables used under the Albertsons label grown , produced and packed in this country?
Are the canned vegetables used under the Albertsons label produced in the country ?
Albertsons is so overpriced, its not funnt, they stick you up without a gun, 3.59 for a gallon of skim milk for example, you can get skim milk at a convenient store for 2.79, I will never shop there again
09/04/2011 Just came back from Albertsons in Lake Havasu City, AZ….weekly circular advertised 10% off your entire purchase any Sunday OR AZ Cardinals Game Day during the NFL football season when you wear your AZ Cardinals Jersey. A huge sign in the front of the store also shows the same advertisement. Manager wouldn't give me the deal because she said it's only on game days and the NFL season hasn't even started yet…. ad does not state that it's only during the regular season. Pre season HAS STARTED. I won't be back.
I too went to Albertson’s in Rio Rancho New Mexico after they advertised 10% off any Sunday during the NFL season when you wear your favorite NFL Team Jersey. They ad did not say “regular” season. The manager would not honor the ad saying it was only for the regular season. The pre season has started. I will not patronize a store that will not honor its ad. I will not be back.
It's interesting to hear about the history of the store! Albertsons is a great company, but like many nationwide businesses it can have some weak spots. I was surfing the internet and I found this site where people can vent about poor customer service or products they received… it can get really funny. I would recommend you to check it out here.
Yesterday, I was in a local Albertson's store. You cannot imagine my surprise when I realized that an announcement was being made on the loudspeaker in Spanish.
As I left the store, I commented to the checker, "I won't be back. I'll never darken the door of another Albertson's because you made the Spanish announcement."
Please join me in a boycott of Albertson's until they announce publicly they have stopped all Spanish announcements. THIS IS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!
Let's act like it.
Hi Joe, You remind me of Archie Bunker when i used to watch 70'S T.V. Most likely you were shopping in a hispanic area where companies have hired them to work here in the melting pot of the world=THIS IS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!! California and most of the southwest was occupied by Mexico so dont panic they were screwed out of their land by european lawyers. The native americans almost acheived genocide by white europeans (my heritage) slaughtering them. You really should take some history courses detailing the events concerning the take over of native America. Have a nice life Jose. P.S. inclusion is way better than exclusion.
Bravo, Larry!
I agree totally.
