Albertsons Market is a North American grocery company based in Boise, Idaho, with more than 240 supermarkets throughout the United States.
History
In 1939, Joe Albertson and partners L.S. Skaggs and Tom Cuthbert opened their first one-stop shopping market, which they named Albertson’s Food Center, in Boise, Idaho. By 1945, Joe Albertson incorporated the store and expanded it into Montana, Oregon, Utah and Washington, and the company eventually went public.
The Albertson’s chain moved into California in 1964 and purchased Greater All American Markets. It then partnered with Skaggs Drug Centers Inc. to open combination food-and-drug stores — a trend that continued until 1976, when the company started to build what is known today as “Superstores” that carry a broader line of products and services.
Between 1977 and 1979, Albertson’s and Skaggs dissolved their partnership, and Albertson’s began building a warehouse-style store for commercial and public use. It eventually established the first fully mechanized distribution center in Portland and began expanding at a rapid rate, acquiring 74 Jewel Osco food-and-drug stores in Arkansas, Florida, Oklahoma and Texas from American Stores Company in 1992. Seven years later, Albertson’s acquired Salk Lake City-based American Stores Company — which operated 288 combination stores, 514 supermarkets and 783 stand-alone drugstores — for $11.7 billion.
To gain Federal Trade Commission approval, the company agreed to divest 145 stores and four store sites in overlapping markets in California, Nevada and New Mexico. This was believed to be the largest retail-merger divestiture ever.
With everything going well, Albertson’s continued expanding, and in 2004 acquire the Shaw’s and Star Markets chains in New England for $2.5 billion. That year Albertson’s was the second largest operator of grocery stores in the United States, trailing only the Kroger Co. In overall food retailing it also trails Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the leader in that category.
Albertson’s operated more than 2,500 stores in 37 states. The retailing stores include about 1,350 combination food-and-drug stores and some 420 conventional supermarkets under the Albertsons, Acme Markets, Jewel Food Stores, Shaw’s, and Star Markets names. The company also operated two dozen warehouse stores (Max Foods and Super Saver Foods) and more than 700 stand-alone drugstores (Osco Drugs and Sav-on Drugs). More than 230 of the company’s stores also include onsite gasoline stations.
Succumbing to competition, Albertsons’s sold itself to SUPERVALU in 2006, and has continued to reduce in size. There are now about 220 stores left in the southern U.S.

This is my second post since two years ago…the last time I was at the Albertson’s in Carrollton, TX at Keller Springs and Josey. Again, I haven’t shopped at this store for a couple years due to them leaving expired product on the shelves…and it happened again…several packages of yogurt were on the shelf with expiration two days old!!! I brought this up to the manager and all he said was sorry. I drive out of my way to go to Kroger…longer distance but food is always fresh. You seriously have a problem at this store, and it leaves me to believe this may be happening at other locations…so I never shop at Albertson’s ANYWHERE!!! Can’t trust the foods are fresh!
I was at a Albertsons to make some purchases. one of the items I bought was land of lakes Monterey jack. now I noticed that your store only carries a one pound package. now in the past I was able to purchase a 8 oz. package. my question is does land of lake cheese package their product in 8 oz.s and if so why doesn’t Albertsons carry it. the reason why i’m asking is because my wife and I are seniors and one pound of cheese is too much for us and it’s just a waste. we’re liked this cheese and we are not interested in purchasing some else’s product thanks
I have worked for Albertsons many years.. I promise you they train us to always make sure our product is the very fresh, and to make sure we have the products in our ad for everyone..if not you are more than welcome to get a rain check..I wish i could have every unsatisfied customer on this site come to our Albertsons in Arlington Texas and show you how we make you feel like family and give you the satisfaction you deserve as a shopper in our store..You are the reason we go to work every day and each and every one of you should smile as you walk out of our store,as well as to have your family and friends smile at the great ,fresh meals you are serving them. Thank you for shopping Albertsons.
been going to Albertsons since they opened in Jackson,wy, my wife says not too
because there so expensive, but what the hey, there only 4 blocks away
and I’m a guy. I don’t look at prices. But yesterday I had company over
and had purchased a watermelon, when I cut it open,it was mealy and
very woody inside ,no big deal I thought,I’ll just go and replace it,got
to the store and this little girl at service counter said” we never replace
produce”. I have in the past, but she argued with me stating that
Albertsons has never done that. No point arguing with an 18 yr old
with that wealth of experience.I threw the watermelon away
sob what else do you want me to comment on
i just noticed in your present weekly ad that you have Tillamook Shingle Sliced or shredded cheese on sale — Shingle ??
I was an Albertson’s shopper in Roseburg Oregon, going where items our family likes because our local Shop Smart didn’t carry them. El Sabroso Original Guacahips and Lovin Scoopfuls (ice cream) have been discontinued there. I have also found that some of the Gluten free products I have purchased are also missing in action. What’s up folks? I asked one of the employees and they told me that all I had to do was request the items from the store manager?? What so they can bring them in and then discontinue them again?? Really hard to find a store that also carries the Ore Ida steamed potatoes, hope they don’t discontinue those too.
Recently Albertsons, Rock Springs, Wyoming store, advertised eggplant on sale. I went to the store the day after receiving ad. There were only 6 on the shelf and they were old and soft. When asked if they had any more I was told no that was all they had. It seemed to me the ad was to get rid of old product. I was very disappointed. I will not purchase produce from Albertson’s again. In fact it will be a long time before I shop at Albertson’s again. I will shop at Smith’s where the produce is fresh.
Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter.
Hi there,
I read somewhere that you guys carried 50 shades of grey wine. Wondering if its true if you are shipping? If so, do you ship in mass or know of a wine place whom carries this wine in my western mass area. I live in Chicopee Massachusetts. This would be of great help.
Thanks
Sincerely,
Melissa Bishop
I love Albertsons, as long as they keep on stocking up on hotwheels. Just keep the four sided shippers coming and I will keep on coming as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!
