BI-LO is a supermarket chain based in Maudlin, South Carolina. They have over 200 markets in the Carolinas, Tennessee and Georgia. Throughout its history, BI-LO has faced difficult times, but it still continues its founder’s vision and is proudly facing a bright future.
History
BI-LO was founded by Frank Wrenn, a former executive of Winn-Dixie, in 1961. Frank’s main focus was providing a store where people could buy name brand products at lower prices. First named “Wrenn and Outlaw”, Frank held a contest for his employees choosing a new name for the grocery chain. His secretary won with the name “BI-LO” which encompassed Frank’s vision.
BI-LO was bought out in 1977 to Ahold, a food conglomerate located in The Netherlands. Ahold also bought Red Food Stores and merged them with BI-LO in 1978. Ahold then went on to acquire Bruno’s Supermarkets and added that as well to its portfolio.
The “BI-LO” brand name was phased out in 2004-2005 and became “Southern Home” with all new packaging. Then, Ahold sold BI-LO and Bruno’s Supermarkets to Lone Star Funds whose specialty is purchasing distressed companies. They promptly sold over 100 BI-LO/Bruno markets and three of the distribution centers in order to focus on renovating its remaining stores and build new ones in markets that offered greater advantage.
In March 2007, Lone Star Funds separated the BI-LO from Bruno’s Supermarkets into its own distinct company. In April, Lone Star decided to put the entire 230-store BI-LO supermarket chain up for sale. The new BI-LO filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 in 2009 stating it was necessary due largely in part to the credit crisis. It expected to continue on with business as usual and received a $10,000,000 loan from GE Capital in order to pay salaries, wages, venders and suppliers.
Shortly after an announcement from the Delhaize Group, based in Belgium, to purchase over $4,000,000 of assets from the supermarket chain, BI-LO filed restructuring plans. Lone Star Funds provided the much needed influx of money to keep the Delhaize Group from acquiring the chain.
In 2003, BI-LO redesigned their store image in a successful attempt to draw a more high-end clientele. The resulting Super BI-LO offered a larger choice in healthier, organic and specialty foods.
BI-LO re-emerged from Chapter 11 in early 2010, and was named one of the Top 75 Retailers in 2010 by Supermarket News. It still remains a part of Lone Star Funds but was reported being put up for sale in August of that year with Kroger and Publix showing interest in purchasing.

Your bi-losurvey.com is a CROCK !! You are BSing your customers ….again.
There is no way that a customer can follow through on this convoluted system. You should be ashamed.
A young man-DANA-in meat market of your crummy store #5016 in Greenville, SC is a good ambassador for Bi-Lo. He deserves recognition.
BTW, you and Ingles are racing toward the bottom of the chain. Your weekly ads are a joke. Check REAL specials with legitimate BO-Gos in PUBLIX ads for a few weeks.
Cheraw needs Bi-Lo if you close IGA can charge what every they want to .Have shopped at Bi-Lo for over 40 years. Can not afford to or have time to drive to Pageland or Hartsville. Do not like Walmart. Please look into keeping our store in Cheraw.
I just left Bi-Lo here in Cheraw a little while ago from buy a few things. A friend of mine that works there told me that they will be closing the store on 11-19-2014 as well as the one in Chesterfield. I am so sad to here this and Very disappointed that after all these years you (Bi-Lo) are leaving this town. I all most grocery shopping there and now I am going to be FORCED to shop at IGA and or Wal-Mart…… Please… whom ever made this decision.. look into to it one more time at how many of us that DO SHOP here and maybe consider just closing one. Thanks for letting me beg on my behave as well as others that will not come here and do so.
I had said Chesterfield, but meant Bennettsville was going to close at the same time. Took me a while to find this page again….. OY, I too remember shopping at Bi-Lo on hwy 9 back when I was a pre-teen when they were in the Family Dollar area and they had the Cows on top of the building. I wanted one of them back then :D.. I think they had a motto of “The home of the Beef People” or something like that. (Wife and I gotten bad meat from IGA and Wally World puts too much die in theirs and do not trust it).
Store # 5593 in florence s.c. I could not find LaTortilla factory low carb whole wheat tortillas today while shopping. Have you stopped stocking them? Service desk was busy so didn’t wait around to ask, and don’t want to call store; the phone rings too much and too long most of the time while I am in store.
As Faith in Action Christian Fellowship begins making plans to once again feed those in our community who might otherwise go hungry for the holidays, I am reaching out to ask for your assistance; whether financial or in the form of donations to make our efforts a success. At a time when many people are focused on giving, others are in a position of need.
Faith in Action Christian Fellowship annual turkey giveaway will provide turkeys and meals for families of the hungry. We are showing our kindness and support to the N. Charleston, SC community to those who are feeling the pain of poverty and misfortune. We are asking that your organization help make it possible for this annual charitable tradition to continue.
Last year, our congregation fed 10 families for Thanksgiving, and provided 25 meals to our local community. We are looking to increase these numbers this year. Faith in Action counted on our generous congregation to donate money and food items to provide this important service to the disadvantaged residents in our community last year, and left out several families due to the lack of supplies available. Our goal is to ensure this does not happens again.
The donation goal for this year is 50 turkeys and 100 meals. Can we count on Bi-Lo’s support to supply 10 turkeys and/or $100 gift card to purchase supplies for our cause and helping us to meet this goal? Ultimately, any donation, no matter how large or small, will make a difference? Your donation to our organization is tax deductible. Your kindness and generosity is greatly appreciated, and will make a difference in the lives of so many people.
I am looking for Stax All Purpose seasoning. Can anyone tell me which Bi-Lo stores in SC carry this?
Your store in St George SC has got to be the worse! Under staffed and those that do work there are incompetent and just lazy. If you go to this store be prepared to wait forever and bag your groceries.
Yes, Hi, I live in Jacksonville Fl, and I shop at your winn Dixie stores here and they carried a southern home brand buddy bars. ONE of the most amazing products I have come across. My ? Is WHY did they ” DISCONTINUE ” this product? As I have been working like mad to get it back in the stores here. Can someone PLEASE inform me of what needs to be done to get this product back.

I work for BI-LO.. Mgt. does not care about the filth in the stockroom. Stockers are allowed to do nothing all the time. A TvV station needs to do a report on the stores… I WOULD NOT SHOP HERE
I have shopped on several occasions only to find the shelves empty-especially the sale This is a VERY frustrating experience for me because I live very close to the location in Charleston, SC (Bees Ferry). The meat specials often are gone within 2-3 days from the beginning of the Wed. sales. I am often told we are expecting a truck “tonight”. Well, am I supposed to come back and shop for dinner at !:00 am?
