Nick_Clegg_-_CropAccording to Nick Clegg, Britain’s deputy prime minister, people should be cautious of GM (genetically modified) food. He says that his children do not consume GM food. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said that adopting GM crops should be done cautiously despite lacking evidence on their negative effect on the health of consumers. Just prior to his sentiments, Owen Paterson, the environment secretary has urged the European Union to loosen its stringent rules on GM crops’ cultivation. According to Paterson, GM crops may even be much safer compared to traditional food. He further insisted that GM food could serve as a perfect opportunity for improving human health.

The Prime Minister, David Cameron’s stance on the issue of GM food has not been given yet. It is unclear whether Cameron would consume GM food or give the food to his family. According to an interview on a radio phone-in, Mr. Clegg said that he doesn’t feed his children GM food knowingly. He said that science should lead people to make sound decisions regarding the issue. He called for caution in consumption of such food, especially with the increasing cases of contamination. He is not opposed to new technologies, but rather thinks that a cautious approach should always be taken when embracing the technologies. GM foods were not available in the United Kingdom until recently. This is why this issue had never been raised in the past.

Despite Nick Clegg’s opinion, it is clear that the issue of GM food and their safety has been brought up in several countries. Up to now, there is no sound evidence to proof that such food is unsafe for human consumption. Therefore, there is need to conduct further investigations in the issue so that the human population can know what is at stake with regard to GM food consumption.
