It all started in May of last year when Kaley Ehret started a drive to collect toiletries, household items and food for donation to the Keystone Opportunity Center Food Pantry.

Ehret, who manages the ‘ChaChing On A Shoestring’ blog, organized this charity collection drive in order to help her followers (who are mostly couponers) have a way of giving back to the community. She encourages people, couponers especially, to donate some of the items from their stockpile (like freebies or inexpensive goods) to charity.

According to her, since couponers have both the ability and resources to stretch their dollars to the maximum, they can afford to give away some extra goods to those who are badly in need of it. Ehret considers couponing a leveling of the playing field for those who can afford to give. She added that as couponers shop, they are able to get a lot more with the budget that they have.

Ehret’s success so far has inspired other frugal bloggers, more than 100 of them, to join her in her campaign this year. Among those who joined is blogger Shannon Shafer, who manages the ‘For the Mommas’ blog. Shafer said that she will be collecting donated items on Saturday at Dunkin Donuts Limerick and Kaley Ehret will be joining her.

Another frugal blogger, Devon Weaver of the blog ‘Mama Cheaps,’ says that couponers are now being given the opportunity to prove to society that extreme couponers are not hoarders.

Still other bloggers and couponers will be joining Ehret in her campaign and are currently encouraging their respective followers to join in on the project as well.
