Domino Foods, Inc Domino Foods, Inc is a refined sugar manufacturing company based in New Jersey, USA. The company packages and distributes sugar to retail stores in all parts of the U.S.

History
The history of Domino Foods, Inc. began with William Havemeyer, who lived and worked in London as a supervisor’s apprentice in a sugar refinery. He moved to New York in 1799 and opened Mr. Seaman’s refinery. His brother Frederick joined him in 1802 and they opened a new sugar refinery in 1807. In 1828, the sons of the Havemeyer brothers took over the business. By the late 1890s the business was known as the biggest sugar refiner in the world and they renamed it American Sugar Refining Company. Due in part to the anti-trust lawsuits brought by the Roosevelt administration, the company registered the patent of Domino Sugar to differentiate the brand from other refined sugar on the market. Most sugar was bought in loose bulk at the time, but American Sugar was available in cubes that resembled dominoes.

In 1891, Henry Osborne Havemeyer became the chairman of the company, and Theodore A. Havemeyer became President. In May 1896, it became one of the original 12 companies in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Over the next several years the company purchased 5 more refineries and in 1900 the name was changed to Domino Sugar. The company concentrated on improving the packaging and introducing new varieties of sugar. It started manufacturing sugar tablets in 1916. The company also introduced the transparent carton in 1920.

The name of the American Sugar Refining Company was changed to Amstar Sugar Corporation in 1970. In the late 1980s the market share of Amstar Sugar was dwindling due to the increased use of artificial sweeteners and the company was purchased by Tate & Lyle, PLC. As a subsidiary, it became Domino Sugar Corporation.

In 2001, Domino Sugar was renamed Domino Foods, Inc. and it was sold to Florida Crystals Corporation and the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida. In 2005, American Sugar Refining, Inc. bought the California & Hawaiian (C & H) Sugar Company. In 2007, it acquired Redpath Sugar, and in 2010 it acquired Tate & Lyle’s European sugar operations. It currently leads the way in research for non-food uses of sugar and has developed a ‘non-sweet’ sugar that is currently used in energy drinks.
