
In determining the finalists, the establishments were judged based on their management of risk factors on a daily basis, that is, how do they handle food to ensure that what the customer is served is 100% contamination free? How equipped and informed the staff is in matters dealing with food safety? Here the management is expected to train the staff in such issues and also how to respond should food become contaminated. The final aspect of judgment was how negative feedback regarding food safety is handled. Are complaints taken with a smile and the situation improved? Or are they simply ignored?
Houlihan’s Restaurant emerged top in the restaurant categories, beating other restaurants such as Richfield American Legion Post and Don Pablos. In the Cafeteria/fast food category, Wendy’s Four Crown on Lyndale Avenue, walked away with the top prize edging out competition from the Arby’s, Subway West and Jimmy Johns. In the retail category, Target store impressed the judges with its quality standards in food safety. The ceremony was also aimed at generally improving the standards of food safety in the area by instigating a little competition. With daily headlines telling a sad tale of how standards of food safety are deteriorating, it is a needed event. As for the winners, not only is their hard work recognized, but it is also marketed to all in attendance and their sales are expected to grow after the event.
