June 8’s episode of “Extreme Couponing” featured a couple from Sylvania, Ohio, who have practiced couponing for three years.
The Crothers are a family of nine and what makes them amazing is that despite having a large family, all they ever spend on groceries every month is only about $200. According to Joni Crothers, when they were not practicing couponing, she had to spend around $1,200 every month for groceries. With the couple’s couponing expertise, they are able to save more than 80 percent of their original grocery budget every month.
According to Sylvia, she and her husband started using coupons three years ago, a time when the family was experiencing financial difficulties. Her husband Jamie lost his job and they had difficulty paying bills. The couple agreed that they could not cut payments on house bills and other financial responsibilities so they decided to try cutting their grocery budget by using coupons. It then became the start of their couponing experience.
Although the family keeps a huge stockpile in their garage, Sylvia says that a large part of that stockpile actually goes to charity. The couple has put their couponing expertise to good use because they have turned it into a complete Christian ministry. Sylvia says that the family is doing this because as a mother herself, she has experienced being the one in need at a certain point. Over the years since the family started doing charity, they have given away an estimated $100,000 worth of grocery to those in need. She added that being featured in “Extreme Couponing” is an exciting thing for the family because it is an opportunity for them to become a witness for God and she hopes to inspire other couponers to share what they have in excess with those who are in need of it.
