farmers marketAt the University of Vermont Londa Nwadike, a food safety expert, recently held a webinar discussing concerns about food safety among vendors at food markets, as well as managers. The discussion was quickly steered to focus on food safety as an advertising tool for farmers, as she stressed the fact that no service provider wants to put their customers in the hospital.

She also pointed out the importance of visuals when it came to marketing one’s own business. She gave the example of how when a vendor looks clean, and uses tools of hygiene such as gloves, and it can be clearly seen that s/he is handling the food properly, customers will definitely take notice. She said that this comes as a result of the confidence that is instilled in them that the food they purchase will be healthy for them. Furthermore, she also detailed other ways in which the farmers can make sure that customers notice their food safety standards. First, they could incorporate signs at their stands that show the fact that they are proud of their personal food safety standards or even to encourage the customers to ask about the safety practices that they use.

Nwadike also gave a bucket full of other reasons as to why proper handling of food should be a top priority for vendors. In addition to the fact that it helps to shield them from lawsuits should customers suffer food poisoning. It also improves the overall image of the entire market. Should one vendor not be very concerned about food safety at their stall, and unfortunately, a customer falls ill as a result, then the entire reputation of the market will be affected. It is important that the vendors send across the message that the health of the customer is important to them.
