A recent survey involving 75 cities showed that Milwaukee tops the list in cities that use the most coupons.

According to the survey, at least forty-one percent of households in Milwaukee use grocery coupons at least once every week. Valerie Jacobsen of the Milwaukee Recreation Program is teaching people how to effectively use coupons. According to Jacobsen, she starts her coupon hunting and collecting by clipping coupons from publications and going online for more.

As a tip, Jacobsen tells potential couponers to visit websites of their favorite products and from there they can usually find coupons that can be printed. Jacobsen added that it is also a good idea to follow these websites on Twitter or Facebook so that they will be updated of any deals that the website might be having. Registering on the website to receive e-mail updates would also be a good thing. Jacobsen shared that she almost always gets her online coupons from Groupons or Living Social.

When it comes to the actual grocery shopping trip, Jacobsen always makes it a point to match up her coupons in order to get the grocery items close to free as much as possible. Also, although it is tempting to buy frivolous things because of the deals that she can get, she does not give in to the temptation. Jacobsen emphasized that she does not buy frivolous things just because they are on sale.

As for bulk buying, Jacobsen does not buy a lot of the same item, even if there are coupons available for it. The reason she doesn’t is because she does not think that buying too much of something that she will not be able to use is considered a good deal.
