Google Inc. has introduced a new way that consumers can pay for their transactions, as well as collect coupons electronically.
As part of its expansion plans in the area of mobile advertising, Google has partnered with Sprint Nextel Corporation and MasterCard Inc. in order to let consumers pay for their purchases and collect coupons via their mobile phones. This announcement was made by the company at a recent New York event.
The system that Google will be using is based on the Near Field Communication Technology. This new technology will be available on Nexus S mobile handsets, which have the Android software by Google. After that, the technology will be made available to other phones, as well.
These two new services will help Google contend for dollars in the retail-marketing industry, like what websites Groupon.com are doing. The services will help Google collect more information on the shopping behaviors of consumers outside of the Internet, as well as stacking up on its knowledge about the online buying habits of consumers.
Once the services became available, Google is expecting to receive profits from delivering offers and advertisements to mobile phones and will not make money off payments. Google Wallet, which the payment service will be called, will be made available free to customers.
Google Wallet will be first available in San Francisco, California and the state of New York in the summer. Google Offers, which the discount and coupon service will be called, will also be available in the same places, as well as in Portland, Oregon.
