Alison Spangler has been named the winner of H-E-B’s Slim Down Showdown competition. The San Antonio teacher won the grand-prize of $10,000 after losing 48 pounds in the competition. Spangler was named the competitions biggest loser beating 23 other contestants. Spangler noted that whereas previously she had no exercise routines she had taken up exercising every day.
H-E-B organized its first Community Slim Down Showdown contest this year that ran for 16 weeks. The competition had received more than 500 applicants who were narrowed down later. The slimming competition had three categories that were used to determine the overall winner: weight loss and overall health, participation and fan engagement. A total of 24 contestants went through the 16-week course in which the winner Spangler moved from a size 24 to a size 16 during this period.
School social worker, Lorena Flournoy from Austin, Texas won the ‘fan favorite’ prize of $5,000 for drawing the most chatter online and in the H-E-B slimdown blog. Flournoy lost 53 pounds in the contest and attracted over 30,000 likes and comments on her blog, making hers the most favorite due to increased online activity.
H-E-B is a supermarket chain headquartered in San Antonio, Texas with more than 315 stores in Texas and Northern Mexico. H-E-B Grocery Company, which is its full name, plans to continue with the Slim Down Showdown competition in 2013 and is calling for applications for the program. The applications have to be submitted by the 21st of October. The applications can be found at heb.com/slimdown. The grocery chain will pick 25 contestants from the numerous applications they receive. The competition aims at helping the people of Texas improve their health and overall well being.
