House of RepsThe House of Representatives recently overwhelmingly voted against the Federal Agricultural Reform and Risk Management act. This act was a modified version of a five-year farm bill. This bill had been popular with a large number of industry leaders in the grocery sector and the news of its rejection is sure to come as a big disappointment to most of those involved. Some of the big names that had expressed their support for the bill include House Speaker, John Boehner, who publicly announced his support for the passing and implementation of the piece of legislation.

According to Robert Guenther, who is the senior vice president of public policy at United Fresh, he felt that the bill would be a big boost for specialty crops. This was because the bill had support from both sides of the house. Robert suggests that the house leadership and the house Agriculture Committee would reconsider and go back to the drawing board and draft a bill of similar nature that would be able to be passed before the September deadline expires.

The biggest reason why the bill did not receive the expected support was that the house bill was very different from the version of the bill that was passed by the Senate earlier in the same month. The bill proposed cuts to the benefits of supplemental nutritional programs. These are commonly referred to as food stamps. The bill also proposed a number of crucial agricultural program reforms. The negotiations for the farm bill are believed to have crumbled back in 2012 when the house did not pass a bill that caused the extension of the 2008 Farm Bill.
