The corporate food clients of this law firm are Dean Foods, Cargill, and Nestle. Additionally, biotech players like DuPont, Dow and Bayer are also represented by the firm. The conference has industry lawyers and a few government officials as the main presenters. A majority of the audience members were from the food industry. It is essential for defense lawyers to inform big food companies on the best food practices. It is necessary to stick to regulations and laws pertaining to food safety.

The conference incorporated multiple sessions. In one such session, food companies were informed on the kind of substantiation that is needed to support any health concerns or claims. Food companies are usually allowed to make specific health concerns or claims on food and food products so long as they support these claims with real science. Another session revolved around protecting children. An issue that was raised is that of the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative (CFBAI) having nutrition guidelines that was ridiculously generous. CFBAI’s director noted that it was one of the best means of protecting children, in comparison to governmental rules and regulations.

Another noteworthy issue in several presentations was that of the ongoing litigation of class action lawsuits with respect to food marketing’s deceptive claims. Some presenters offered tips on how their clients could avoid such lawsuits. A great concern was that of “natural” cases where one of the attorneys gave a suggestion for food manufacturers to avoid the use of natural labeling. There were differing views on whether the FDA should allow or not allow the use of natural labels on food products made of genetically engineered sources. The conference is a clear indication that food safety is a major issue of concern.
