History
Alfred Peet was the founder of Peet’s Coffee and Tea in April of 1966. He opened his first coffee shop in Berkeley, California on the corner of Vine and Walnut Streets. His inspiration for starting the business was to provide good quality coffee to Americans, whom he believed at the time were getting poor quality coffee.
In the early years, Peet’s strategy for coffee making was considered radical. He processed coffee in small batches and he made sure that what he had were superior quality fresh beans. The darker roasted coffee that he produced had complexity and richness.
By 1969, Peet’s Coffee and Tea became a regular spot for coffee lovers and this prompted others to put up gourmet shops in the neighborhood. Because of the success of his coffee and tea business, Alfred Peet soon became an inspiration to a new generation of entrepreneurs specializing in coffee. Back then, the founders of Starbucks were among those that he mentored. Eventually, Peets ended up supplying roasted coffee beans during Starbuck’s initial years of operation.
Peet’s prides itself with having better beans and better beverages. They deliver their coffees as soon as possible after roasting in order to assure customers of the freshness of the product. This is what they call “Roaster-to-Cup” freshness and this is what sets them apart from their competitors.
In May of 2007, Peet’s Coffee and Tea opened its new artisan facility for roasting. Located just six miles from its Emeryville headquarters, the new coffee roasting facility marked a significant milestone for the company. The building’s layout and equipment were all designed to work with the company’s hand-roasting coffee process. It was also designed such that the original strategy of processing small batches of coffee and delivery within 24 hours will be accommodated. Added to that, the new facility was also designed using the environmental LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) approach in that it made use of recycled materials, low energy heating and lighting and water efficient plumbing and landscaping.
In the past 40 years, Peet’s Coffee and Tea has continued to thrive because of the growing number of coffee lovers, not only in the San Francisco area, but also in the entire nation. Since its first year, Peet’s mission has remained the same,to raise the American coffee lovers’ expectations by providing them with great quality coffee.
