plasticPlastic packaging has phthalate chemicals, which have been prohibited in a few countries. These chemicals have been linked to several ailments including hypertension. The key function of phthalate chemicals is to soften plastic, such as shower curtains and credit cards. The Pediatrics Journal, published an article that indicated that almost three thousand children between six and nineteen years who had exposure to the chemicals had higher blood pressure levels compared to those who had not been exposed to the phthalate chemicals. The high-pressure levels could have serious health implications in such children in later life. Scientific studies have shown that exposure to high levels of phthalate chemicals could cause damage to arterial walls via oxidative stress. Additionally, the chemicals may cause damage to heart cells. The chemicals find their way into food products through gloves and wrappings made of plastic.

The phthalate debate has been going on for several years. Such chemicals are at times called endocrine disruptors because it is claimed that they interfere with hormones, thereby reducing sperm count. Some of these plastic materials have been banned in Denmark. According to a report by the World Health Organization, there is the need for further research to be carried out on the link between phthalate chemicals and the increasing rates of illnesses such as ADHD and diabetes. The organization also raised concerns regarding the high number of young children exposed to these chemicals. Phthalates have further been claimed to cause asthma and allergic reactions. Phthalates enter the food via packaging. It is therefore recommended for people to avoid the use of plastic containers when microwaving drinks or food. Where possible, food should be stored in containers made of glass.
