A recent list published by NSF International, contained information stating that kitchen appliances are most notorious for harboring germs. According to the study they carried out, the ‘germiest’ of all tools in the kitchen were the can opener, vegetable and meat trays, the rubber spatulas and the blender. They are definitely not the first appliances that would come to mind if asked about germ carriers in the kitchen, but the test results showed that people should be most careful when dealing with the appliances.
Overall, it was revealed that kitchen appliances are the most tainted with illness causing pathogens and the group is urging all consumers to carry out proper sanitation practices when dealing with all utensils that come into contact with anything that we will later eat or drink. A recent statistics report showed that of the outbreaks between 2009 and 2010 related to food contamination, 21% of them could be traced back to home cooked food. This showed that these outbreaks could be greatly reduced if there was a greater regard to food safety among our households.
The study was carried out in South Eastern Michigan, where residents swabbed 14 kitchen items and then the swabs taken in for testing. The researchers were mainly looking for food borne bacteria including Listeria, Salmonella and E. coli. The test recorded a full 100% presence of mold and yeast on all of the items that were swabbed. Salmonella was detected in 25% of the items under testing, particularly in the compartments for meat and vegetables, the spatulas and the blenders. E. coli also came in the same percentage and Listeria was present in 10% of the items tested. Listeria is potentially dangerous to pregnant women and is also more stable than the other two bacteria at refrigerator temperatures. The study was a follow-up to the one that was carried out in 2011 that named the places that had the most germs. The sponge and the sink came out on top of the list.
