TLC’s reality program Extreme Couponing recently featured Stephanie Barr, a mother from Buford, who has been using a whole lot of coupons to save on her grocery bills.

Extreme Couponing staff went with Barron on her recent trip to the grocery to see how much she could save by using her coupons. According to Barr, she saves about 50 % of her grocery bill most of the time. This is not accomplished without any effort however, as Barr spends almost 10 hours every week clipping and organizing her coupons. She spends a lot of time clipping and printing coupons during Sundays and she utilizes all five of her computers in order to print ten pages of printable coupons in one go. She also buys four Sunday newspapers and drives around the neighborhood picking up newspapers on homes that have been foreclosed. By doing this, Barr has been able to save nearly ten thousand dollars every year.

Picking up newspapers from foreclosed homes does not come as a shocker to viewers of the show. At one time, Extreme Couponing even featured one homemaker rifling through large garbage bins just to look for coupons from Sunday newspapers. Barr said that she has not tried looking for coupons on garbage bins, but she knows that some people are doing it.

Another of Barr’s strategy is to shop at grocery stores that do not have strict coupon policies. At these stores, she makes the most out of the deals that she gets, even getting some grocery items for free. She also goes grocery shopping armed with a list of items to buy and her coupon binder. During her last trip to the grocery, her total went up to $73.50, but after all the coupons and her loyalty card had been scanned, her total went down to $24.30.
