Tony’s Meats is a private company engaged in the processing of value-added meat products. The company is headquartered in Nova Scotia, Canada.

History
Tony’s Meats, also known as Antagonish Abattoir, was established in 1963. By 1976, the company was able to upgrade the red meat-processing plant to one that adheres to the government’s program for federal inspection of different types of fresh meat such as pork, lamb and beef.

In 1984, Tony’s Meats focused on becoming a business that engaged in the production of value-added meats. It soon introduced its fresh sausages to the market and within two years added additional products such as bacon, cooked meats, cooked sausages and hams to its product range. Three years later, the company launched the brand name Tony’s. Soon, Tony’s expanded its scope all throughout the area of Northeast Nova Scotia.

In the succeeding years, Tony’s continued to expand and its market share continued to grow. With this, the company began adding new equipment and infrastructure to its facility.

In 2001, the company’s facility was already operating at its maximum capacity. In order to make operations more efficient and to be able to accommodate higher demand, the company decided to expand once again. This expansion was completed by 2002, one year later. The new facility had space for receiving, processing and shipping and included a freezer and an area for dry storage as well.

Currently, Antigonish Abbatoir Ltd. is privately-owned by 15 shareholders/farmers and employs about 45 people. Its facility has also been given a HACCP certification, proof of how safe the company’s processes and products are. Antigonish Abbatoir normally processes 350 hogs, as well as 60 lambs, every week. The company’s products are marketed in different parts of Atlantic Canada, as well as in different export markets. The company’s processed products are marketed under the brand Tony’s and are shipped mainly in the areas of St. Pierre and Atlantic Canada.

As part of Antigonish Abbatoir’s future plans, the company plans to focus on creating more value-added meat products, as this is an area where the company feels that they can grow even more strongly.
