West Grey Premium Beef Inc. is a privately owned Canadian meat processing and meat distribution company headquartered in Ontario, Canada.
History
Founders Peter Knipfel, Doug Calhoun, and George Maxwell established West Grey Premium Beef Inc., or WGPB, in 2003. Calhoun and Maxwell were 4th generation of farmers from Bruce County, while Knipfel owned a local grocery shop.
George Maxwell and his wife own and manage Maxwell Beef Farms Limited. This farm raises about 2500 heads of cattle in an area of about 2500 acres. The business has an environmental farm plan and is certified as an Ontario corn-fed beef producer.
Doug Calhoun and his wife also own and manage an 800-acre cattle farm capable of running about 3,500 heads of cattle. Calhoun has 30 years of experience in the cattle business and has held various positions on different committees, including President of the Ontario Cattle Feeders.
Peter Knipfel and his wife own and manage a local retail store, The Grocery Store. Knipfel has over than 30 years of experience and has held a variety of management positions during this time.
WGPB became a reality when a business establishment, Don Schenk’s Meats, was sold. This provided an opportunity for WGPB to establish a store where they could offer their products to consumers. The owners realized that there was a high demand for trustworthy beef in the local area. Soon, the business began to expand because the need for their beef had increased.
When the business was established, the three founders’ main goals were to be able to provide premium quality beef to consumers, as well as prove that not all beef is created equal. At WGPB, it is a known fact that premium quality beef starts at farm level and needs years of knowledge and experience, as well as the assistance of modern technology. Also, attention must be given to every step of the growth period of the animal. This, the company believes, is what makes the difference between beef and premium beef.
