ratOn April 12, a warehouse in Ridgewood, New York was under the raid of US Marshals after the FDA reported that it was heavily infested with rodents. The warehouse is used for the manufacture and distribution of kosher food products.

The seizure of the warehouse, which is currently under the ownership of V.I.P. foods, was initiated after the FDA got a warrant from the US District Court in New York’s Eastern District. An inspection carried out in February revealed that the condition within the facility were unsanitary and completely went against the regulations laid down by the FDA, particularly the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

The inspectors found live rodents crawling around the facility, a rodent that had been killed and desiccated lying in the open at the same facility. There was also what the agents assumed were tracks used by the rodents, gnaw holes and worse, pellets of excreta from the rodents, near or even inside the food products, the same products that would be introduced into the market for human consumption.

The warehouse contained a number of dried mixes and other cooking bases such as bases for chicken soup, bread crumbs and mixes for blueberry muffins. One of the agents at the FDA was reported saying that the conditions were more than deplorable, but he continued to assure the public that the agency will continue to strive for sanitary food standards and they will take very aggressive actions against violators of the regulations set by the agency. There have not yet been any reported cases following consumption of the V.I.P. foods, but the agency is sending out notices that should any illness or effects be noticed as a result of the products, one should inform the agency without fail. V.I.P. foods are distributed under the label VIP or V.I.P., while other products are named KoJel.
