bee and cherry blossomWhole Food recently embarked on a campaign to sensitize people on what the world would be like if there were no bees to pollinate plants. The company removed half of their stock in one of their stores in an effort to show how their department would look like if the bees were put out of the picture. The results of the undertaking found that the store took out 52% of their stock, which were about 237 out of 453 types of products in the store. A large part of the stock that was removed included apples, eggplant, avocados and broccoli.

There has been a drastic drop in the number of bees in the country over the past several years. This has been a cause for great concern considering that most people do not know the important part that these small insects play in the eco-system. This campaign was aimed at increasing the awareness on the effects of any further decline in the population of bees on the food supply in the country.

Pollinators, more especially bees, provide a critical link in the food production chain. The pollinators play the most important part in 85% of the plant species in the world. Most of the food in this category plays a very important role in the natural diet that we consume. Pollinator conservationist such as the Xerces Society have been working with farmers from most parts of the world to assist them in creating wild-flower habitat and use less pesticides in their practice. This is because pesticides are believed to be one of the biggest killers of the pollinators. This ends up having a negative effect on food production in the world.
