History
The history of Hansen’s Natural Corporation traces back to 1935, when Hubert Hansen and his sons started a fresh juice business in California called Hansen’s Fruit and Vegetable Juices. Later, the name of the company was changed to The Fresh Juice Company of California, Inc and they began selling juice to Hollywood film studios. Soon, a new manufacturing plant was opened in Los Angeles.
The products of the company included fresh juices and blends. It also started to export its products to other countries through a company in Illinois. In 1977, Hubert Hanson’s grandson Tim started making natural sodas and shelf stable juices. In 1978, he formed a division of Hansen’s Foods and named it Hansen’s Natural Sodas. By the end of the 1980s, company sales had reached $50 million. In January 1990, the company was purchased by California CoPackers Corporation. The sales of the company skyrocketed, reaching $171 million in 1991. The same year, it also started selling its products in glass bottles instead of cans.
In 1992, the company was acquired by an investment company. At the time, Rodney Sacks was the head of the investment group. The company’s name was also changed to Hansen Natural Corporation. During the 1990s, more products were introduced such as lemonades and iced tea. In 1993, the company expanded to the Midwest. In July 1994, it introduced Equator drinks to its product line. In 1996, it started manufacturing smoothies and carbonated energy drinks.
In 1994, the company took its products to United Kingdom under the name Hansen Beverage Company (UK) Limited. However, the company closed in 1997 due to poor sales. At the time, the company had a tough competitor in the U.S., Red Bull. However, it survived due to the quality of its drinks. The sales of the company also reached $43 million. It expanded the business by selling its products to supermarkets. The company signed an agreement with Brio Industries, Inc. to distribute its products in Canada.
