A student from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York was arrested last May 12 for posting fake coupons on the Internet.
Lucas Henderson, a student of computer security, was said to have posted fake coupons on the Zoklet and 4chan websites. Henderson turned himself in and has been charged with making all kinds of fake coupons totaling to several hundred thousand dollars. As a result of his actions, manufacturers and retailers had to pay out on the coupons, which resulted in a loss of several hundred thousand dollars. This was revealed on a press release made by the Department of Justice.
Henderson, 22, has been charged with counterfeiting and wire fraud. With the charges filed, he is now facing a maximum of 30 years in prison. The cases were filed with the United States District Court for New York’s Southern District.
Henderson posted fake coupons for different types of products, from Tide detergents to Sony Playstations and used online aliases Anonymous234, Anonymous123 and Anonymous345. The fake coupons were said to mimic the original coupons that were found at Smartsource.com. Henderson made a mistake however when he posted fake coupons showing his IP address at school.
In past years, coupon fraud in the Internet has become a rampant and serious problem, especially for retailers. These fake coupons have been causing retailers to lose thousands of dollars in profit. Currently, the affected website Zoklet has removed a number of its coupon discussion sections. However, cached versions of those removed pages still show the fake coupons posted.
