Harry Tuffins is a British company that runs a chain of supermarkets in the UK, as well as several petrol stations. This family-owned company has its head office at Powys,UK.
History
In 1955, Harry Tuffin and his wife decided to start a business by putting up two petrol pumps and a garage. After a while, the couple decided to add a small shop to their business. Five years after Harry Tuffin started the business, his daughter Ruby, together with her husband Roy, decided to join her father’s business. Ruby and Roy focused on running the shop while Harry put his focus on running a school bus and taxi service.
In 1969, the family-run company purchased a 2-acre site on the village’s edge. The company then opened a supermarket on the site three years later. The supermarket had an area of 3,000 square feet and included a petrol station. In 1974, the company started its own Sunday Market, which was held on the site’s car park. Two years later, in 1976, the family business suffered a blow when founder Harry Tuffin passed away at the age of 57. In 1978, Harry’s wife Doris also passed away.
Ruby and Roy took over the company’s management. Their son Paul and their daughter Sallie later joined them. In 1982, the company joined NISA, or the National Independent Supermarkets Association. The organization allows independent member supermarkets to buy products or goods at very low prices. In turn, the member supermarkets can then sell these goods to consumers for very reasonable prices.
In 1988, the company opened a store in Craven Arms. In 1993, Harry Tuffins Ltd bought Montgomeryshire Natural Water Company. This company now supplies bottled water for a number of wholesalers, independent supermarkets and buying groups. In 2006, the company was able to acquire a garage and petrol business located in the area of Cleobury Mortimer.
In January of 2007, Harry Tuffin Ltd opened a new business in the area of Ludlow. Two years after, the company was able to acquire an already existing business in the area of Machynlleth. In 2010, the company bought a few Somerfield stores in the area of Lydney and Coleford, which it converted to Harry Tuffin stores. In 2011, the company opened another of its stores, this one located in the area of Holywell.
