It is the biggest employee-owned grocery store chain in the United States with over 140,000 employees. Publix is considered one of the biggest grocery chains that are regional and operating more than 1,000 stores. They are based in Lakeland, Florida. Publix operates under several names and even offers its own cooking schools.

Publix Supermarkets offers a wide range of products that include bakery, dairy, deli, general grocery, produce, meat, seafood, snacks, GreenWise products, liquor, gasoline, sushi, dry ice and prepared foods. They run eight grocery-distribution centers and nine brand name manufacturing facilities. Each store is approximately 46,000 square feet. The manufacturing centers produce the dairy, bakery, deli and other food.

GreenWise is a line of products that are organic and traditional. GreenWise Markets are aimed at healthier eating and nutrition, and offer a hot bar and salad station. Most Publix stores include a salad and hot bar and have a section for GreenWise products.
Pulbix Sabor stores (‘sabor’ is ‘flavor’ in Spanish) are especially for the Hispanic communities in Florida. These stores offer products that would not normally be found in a supermarket, to allow them to cook with authentic flavors.
Publix Pharmacy is a service that is consistently ranks number one in customer satisfaction. Publix Pharmacy often offers free antibiotics, blood pressure medication (with a prescription) and flu shots.
Apron’s Cooking Demonstrations take place at in-store kiosks that feature easy to make dishes that are nutritious and tasty. Customers get the chance to taste the recipe and take it home with them.
Apron’s Cooking Schools are a part of the Apron’s family. There are seven schools and they offer classes to children 8-12 and 13-18, and adults. Locations of the schools are Boca Raton, Plantation, Tampa, Sarasota, Jacksonville and Tallahassee in Florida, and Alpharetta, Georgia.
Special orders can be made by any customer. Rarely stocked or unusual items for most any department, even those from competitors, can be placed. The service includes items that are usually found at health food stores such as organic fruit, vegetables and meat, vegan and vegetarian products and foods that are hypoallergenic.
As of fiscal year end December 2009 (latest data available), the company’s sales were a total of $24.3 billion, all of which was grocery related.
