On February 25th, E & J Brandy announced a voluntary recall of its stainless steel flasks due to a possible health risk caused by lead. Laboratory analyses revealed that brandy which is stored in these flasks showed an elevated amount of lead. The company stresses that this recall does not include any bottles of E & J Brandy.
The recalled flasks, which were included in the VSOP gift sets are rectangular, silver, and have “E & J VSOP,” engraved on the face of the flask. The recalled flasks which were included in the XO gift sets in 2006 are round, silver and have “E & J” engraved on the face of the flask. The gift sets were sold to customers throughout the country by retail stores since 2006 until the last holiday season. Several of the affected flasks were also given as promotional items in 2007.
Lead, when ingested in the body can cause serious health risks. Overexposure to the element can result in major damage in the body, such as the nervous system, the reproductive system, the urinary system and the blood forming system of the body.
Consumers of E & J Brandy who have these steel flasks are advised to call the customer hotline at 1-866-959-8477 anytime. They will be given instructions as to how to return the flasks and how to receive a complete refund. The company emphasized that the brandy which came with the gift sets are not affected by the recall and should not be something that customers should be concerned about. However, any liquid that was stored in the affected flasks should be not consumed.
