The company serves the states of Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma.

Established in 1931 in Plainview, Nebraska, the company was originally called General Wholesale name until 1977 when the name was changed to Affiliated Foods. Affiliated Foods is owned by 850-plus independent grocers spread across 16 states. Affiliated Foods is also a member of the Retailer Owned Food Distributors & Associates.

The company has an affiliation with IGA (Independent Grocers Alliance) supermarkets and distributes the Shurfine brands. The Shurfine range of products includes Shurfine beverages that were introduced in a 2010 program with 28 flavors designed to offer competitive pricing.  Additional products include Shurfine pizza, Shurfresh/Shurfine products, which is the biggest label in the cooperative, and Shurfine Cow Belle Creamery ice cream, with many flavors that the company says is made using America’s highest quality milk and is made to melt away cravings even of the sweetest sweet tooth.

The company, being a member-owner of Topco, distributes other private brands that are designed to facilitate the members’ attempts at differentiation and competing in the marketplace. Some of the private labels include Academix for school and office supplies, Easyclix for photo items, Electrix for electrical products and light bulbs, flashlights and batteries, Domestix for cookware and bake ware. Other brands include Clear Value, Top Care, Full Circle, Wide Awake Coffee, Paws Premium and World Classic Trading Co., with different lines of merchandise.
