BI-LO is a supermarket chain based in Maudlin, South Carolina. They have over 200 markets in the Carolinas, Tennessee and Georgia. Throughout its history, BI-LO has faced difficult times, but it still continues its founder’s vision and is proudly facing a bright future.
History
BI-LO was founded by Frank Wrenn, a former executive of Winn-Dixie, in 1961. Frank’s main focus was providing a store where people could buy name brand products at lower prices. First named “Wrenn and Outlaw”, Frank held a contest for his employees choosing a new name for the grocery chain. His secretary won with the name “BI-LO” which encompassed Frank’s vision.
BI-LO was bought out in 1977 to Ahold, a food conglomerate located in The Netherlands. Ahold also bought Red Food Stores and merged them with BI-LO in 1978. Ahold then went on to acquire Bruno’s Supermarkets and added that as well to its portfolio.
The “BI-LO” brand name was phased out in 2004-2005 and became “Southern Home” with all new packaging. Then, Ahold sold BI-LO and Bruno’s Supermarkets to Lone Star Funds whose specialty is purchasing distressed companies. They promptly sold over 100 BI-LO/Bruno markets and three of the distribution centers in order to focus on renovating its remaining stores and build new ones in markets that offered greater advantage.
In March 2007, Lone Star Funds separated the BI-LO from Bruno’s Supermarkets into its own distinct company. In April, Lone Star decided to put the entire 230-store BI-LO supermarket chain up for sale. The new BI-LO filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 in 2009 stating it was necessary due largely in part to the credit crisis. It expected to continue on with business as usual and received a $10,000,000 loan from GE Capital in order to pay salaries, wages, venders and suppliers.
Shortly after an announcement from the Delhaize Group, based in Belgium, to purchase over $4,000,000 of assets from the supermarket chain, BI-LO filed restructuring plans. Lone Star Funds provided the much needed influx of money to keep the Delhaize Group from acquiring the chain.
In 2003, BI-LO redesigned their store image in a successful attempt to draw a more high-end clientele. The resulting Super BI-LO offered a larger choice in healthier, organic and specialty foods.
BI-LO re-emerged from Chapter 11 in early 2010, and was named one of the Top 75 Retailers in 2010 by Supermarket News. It still remains a part of Lone Star Funds but was reported being put up for sale in August of that year with Kroger and Publix showing interest in purchasing.

I recently shopped at a local BiLO in Greenville and found packages of freshly ground chuck without the fat content label. I was informed that the department “ran out” of labels for that batch and was assured that they were the 85%/15% grade I was looking for!!! No, thanks!
Sounds sketchy to me, not to say they are breaking the law!!
I am very Glad that BI-LO Bought out the Pig and is on the way into Savannah Area , Kroger Has had no stores to in this area to challenge them , BI-LO will do that and do well here!… I love your weekly ads! welcome to the Coastal area! I will be looking forward to Nov. 08, 2013 …BEST OF LUCK TO BI-
LO!
I had six prescriptions (including my HIV meds) filled at the Bi-Lo pharmacy in Surfside.
Since my co-pay is zero, one of the pharmacist said I was worth six zeros. I must correct him as there is only 3 zeros in the $78,000. a year I was trying to bring to the table.
The other pharmacist ended a simple conversation about an iron supplement, with a big GAY “Bye” .
I only allow two strikes.
Keeping my $78,000. going to Walgreen.
I’m passing this message to Careteam and all my Facebook friends.
Enjoy your prejudice instead of the money!
I am going to call the store on tomorrow to complain about the poor service I received on today when I visited a Bi-Lo store to purchase groceries. There is simply too much to be said to detail in this forum. Someone should look into why the store was in such a state that I know to be non representative of Bi-Lo.
I don’t like this new rule that you have to buy 2 of the buy one get one free. Just won’t buy at all.
I thought BI-LO would have consistent pricing from one store to another but milk at 23rd st in Chatt, tn is 4.19 a gallon when two other BI-LO stores less than 3 miles away are 3.69 a gallon. That just doesn’t seem right.
We just moved to Franklin, NC and shopped at Bi-Lo. I purchased your Southern Home Orange Sherbet. Honestly, it is the best Orange Sherbet that I’ve had in my life. It was so favorful with a wild kick of orange.
After hearing about " pink slime" being added into ground beef I would like to know if this is or has been added into the ground beef that I have been purchasing, in good faith from Bi Lo?
Why is it that when I go to the 38th st store in Myrtle Beach on saturday the dairy is empty and I am told the produst is in the cooler and noone to work it. I travel to the N Myrtle Store at 37th st and I see the store is stocked and I have seen the Myrtle Beach 38th ave store dairy man working there just after I have left the store for lack of product. Does N Myrtle Beach get perferencial treatment? I am now shopping more Food Lion as there stores are stock.
I love your Southern Home Chicken Salad and have posted my opinion as to how good it is. Would you please send me a picture of the product to add to the post.
Thank you
