Food Basics USA is a major supermarket chain that operates within the Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York City metropolitan areas of America. They currently sell an array of products including baked goods and fresh cuts of meat.
History
Food Basics is one of the many supermarket chains operated under The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company and the first store opened in 2001. This makes Food Basics a modern supermarket compared to most others in the industry that have their ancestry dating back to the 1800s. The initial store was opened in Paterson, New Jersey and for a few years this was also the headquarters for the company.
In the beginning, the company followed the business model of Canadian stores, which meant that it had no fresh produce and no plastic bags. Customers were able to get cardboard boxes for free to carry their purchases in, as an aim to be environmentally friendly. Due to popular demand, the store soon got reusable plastic bags but charged a small fee hoping to deter customers from using them excessively. However, this also got the company many complaints and they soon began distributing plastic bags like every other supermarket.
In 2006, the company was modified to sell a larger range of products including fresh produce, fresh cuts of meat, deli goods and bakery products.
Between 2001 and the current day, the smaller stores belonging to the parent company have been converted into Food Basics stores, giving a total of 12 stores around the New Jersey and New York area. However, the financial troubles of the parent company are leading to projected closures by spring 2011 of all the Food Basics stores.
