HE Butt Grocery Company runs a chain of regional supermarkets in Texas and parts of northern Mexico. Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, it operates the Southwest’s biggest bread and milk processing facilities. They make ice cream, corn and potato chips, and many other private label products. They also have their own photo-finishing operation. The company gives 5% of every pre-tax dollar to charitable foundations.
The company operates over 300 stores in 150 communities in Texas, covering about 55% of the Texas retail grocery market. A majority of the stores are in San Antonio, Houston and Austin. They operate five main formats in the U.S.

H-E-B standard stores operate as normal supermarkets with a mixture of general grocery, frozen foods, meat, pharmacy, paper goods, health and beauty products and produce.
There are two H-E-B Plus! stores. They carry everything the general H-E-B stores carry but they have an expanded non-food inventory. These include expansion of departments such as party goods, housewares, toys, baby products, and cosmetics. They include sections such as Do-it-Yourself and Texas Backyard.
Central Market is H-E-B’s upscale market that features organic products, produce, a European style bakery, international foods, and an extensive wine and beer collection. There are two stores in Austin and one each in Dallas, Houston, Fort Worth, Southlake, San Antonio, and Plano.
Mi Tienda is ‘my store’ in Spanish and the stores are centered on providing service to the Latino market. These stores include a panaderia (bakery), tortilleria (tortillas), and a carneceria (meat market). These stores carry items representative to the Latino community. The stores also include the Cocina restaurant that serves tortas, tacos, tamales and other Latin specialties.
Joe V’s Smart Shop stores are warehouse-style discount stores. Products are displayed on pallets or industrial shelving, no fancy displays. The stores average 100,000 square feet of space. There are two stores in the unincorporated area of Harris County near Houston, Texas.

HE Butt Grocery Company was ranked Number 12 by Forbes’, America’s Largest Private Companies in 2011. In 2010, they received the honor of Retailer of the Year by Progressive Grocer and in 2008, Supermarket News ranked H-E-B Number 13 in the Top 75 North American Food Retailers.
HE Butt Grocery is a privately held retailing company with over 76,000 employees as of 2010, with Charles Butt as chairman and CEO. Their motto is “Here, Everything is Better.™” The company is ranked Number 12 with a market share of 1.9% according to 2010 estimates (the latest data available).
According to their fiscal year end in October 2009, total sales were $15 billion, which includes sales from the stores in Mexico. The average estimated store size is 55,000 square feet.
