Dr. Schär is a food company engaged in the production of gluten-free food. The company’s vision is to become one of the leading specialists for specific nutritional and dietary needs in both America and Europe.

History
Dr. Schär was founded by a joint plan between Dr. Schär (an Innsbruck doctor) and the company Untertrifaller. This partnership began in 1922 and was focused on creating foods that would promote a healthy diet. The newly built partnership focused first on nutritionally packed foods for young children. With this, the company was able to come up with a line of gluten-free products. This range of food products targeted children with gastrointestinal problems.

In 1981, the project was remodelled under the management of its leader Ulrich Ladurner. The new project specialized  in producing only gluten-free foods . When the company launched its gluten-free products to the market, it was with the collaboration of celiac societies and doctors. After a few years, the company started to gain recognition in the market as a gluten-free food producer.

The company first became a leader in gluten-free foods in Italy. With the help of a continuous investment strategy on new technologies, quality improvements and product innovations, the company was soon known in other parts of the world, as well.

In 1996, operational and production facilities were put up in Burgstall, its headquarters in Italy. In 1998, the company initiated major quality campaigns which allowed it to hold its own when pitted against conventional foods. In 2002, the company took over Nutrition Point. This was also the year when Dr Schär opened its subsidiary in the UK. The DS brand (Dietary Specials) became a leading brand in the industry of food retail.

In 2006, the company took over the retail food brand Glutano. In the same year, production facilities were built in Germany, in the areas of Dreihausen and Apolda. The company also established another of its subsidiaries, Dr Schär Deutschland. A year later, the company acquired the brands Trufree and Glutafin. Dr Schär USA was also born in the same year. In 2011, the company completed its production facilities in Spain (Zaragoza) while construction is still undergoing in its USA (New Jersey) production facility.
