Family Dollar is a regional chain of variety stores located in the United States. It is positioned to move forward as one of the fastest growing retailers in the country. They already hold 1% of the grocery market in the United States. This chain of stores provides their customers with unique merchandise and every day convenience, as well as low prices.
About Family Dollar
The story of Family Dollar is really quite remarkable. Family Dollar began when a 21-year-old entrepreneur became intrigued with the idea of opening a retail store with low overhead and self-service. The young man, Leon Levine, knew that he could provide quality merchandise to his customers for under $2 because he had grown up in his family’s retail store. In 1959, he opened the first Family Dollar store in Charlotte, North Carolina. A decision he never regretted, no doubt.
His management philosophy has always stayed the same. It is a simple one, “the customers are the boss, and you need to make them happy.” His stores have always allowed customers to shop easily. Today, Family Dollar is a chain of over 6,800 stores in 44 states and the District of Columbia. Just over the last ten years, the company has added 4,000 new stores to their chain. Family Dollar is headquartered in Matthews, North Carolina.
It is also now a fortune 400 company. It takes pride that it gives customers good value on basic products in a no gimmicks, convenient, self-service environment for over 50 years. Most of its merchandise is priced under $10.00.
Community
In addition to providing quality merchandise at low prices, Family Dollar also supports non-profit organizations. In 2005, Family Dollar established FamilyHOPE. This program is set up for Family Dollar Team Members to give financial support in case of natural disasters. In this program Family Dollar 100% of contributions go toward helping the Team Members and pays all administrative fees. They have engaged with an independent firm, Foundation for the Carolina’s to help manage the fund. Applications are completely confidential and no one in the company contributes to the decision making process.
