If you are going on a grocery trip this week for some fruits and vegetables, here are some food items you may want to check for as these are going to be the week’s good buys, in terms of price. Although the prices may be low at grocery stores this week, you still need to check if the quality is good.
If you are shopping for lettuce, a good tip is to check first for freshness before buying. Check if the leaves seem withered or that they are not as fresh looking as they should be. If you cannot find lettuce (leaf or romaine) that looks as fresh as it can, try checking out those plastic boxes containing mixed greens. These greens (including lettuce) that you will find there will be in good quality. For instance, one plastic box of ‘artisan lettuce’ will have the equal of four small heads of different kinds of lettuce and all of them are in good quality. The ‘artisan lettuce’ is a product of Tanimura & Antle, a California packer.
Another food item to check before buying are strawberries. Again, they may be sold for a lower price, but consider first if their quality is enough for you to spend money on. California strawberries are generally of good quality so they should be considered a good buy. To enhance the flavor of strawberries, after washing them briefly, air dry and slice them an hour before eating. You can then sprinkle a little sugar and let it stand at room temperature for some time. After a while, the sugar will improve the flavor of the strawberries.
