Golden Flakes Snack Food, Inc. is a snack manufacturing company based in Birmingham, Alabama. The company manufactures and distributes potato chips, cheese puffs, tortilla chips, fried onion rings, corn chips, and pork skins in a variety of flavors. It also supports various sports teams in the local area.
The history of Golden Flakes Snack Foods, Inc. started in 1923, when Magic City Food Products Company was established by Frank Mosher and Mose Lischkoff. They manufactured potato chips and named them Golden Flake. Apart from potato chips, the company also manufactured peanut butter, roasted peanuts, and crackers. The potato chips became hugely popular, and the company started to employ salesmen. Helen Friedman purchased the interest of Lischkoff and married Frank Mosher. When they divorced the company came under the control of Freidman. This started the growth of Magic City Food, and the company managed to survive the Great Depression.
The business was soon expanded to all parts of Alabama. In 1946, the company was acquired by the Babinski family. Under the ownership of the Babinski family, the company grew into a multi-million dollar enterprise. In 1956, Sloan Y. Babinsky acquired the company, which had been owned by his father, and changed the name to Golden Flake, Inc. In 1958, the company moved to a new manufacturing plant with more facilities in Birmingham, Alabama. The company acquired Don’s Foods, Inc. in 1963, which continued to operate under the same name until 1966.
In 1968, the company became public. After that, it expanded its business to areas other than snack food manufacturing. It acquired Steel City Bolt & Screw, Inc., Nall and Associates, and many other companies, expanding to real estate and insurance.
In 1977, Babinsky formed a parent company and named it Golden Enterprises, Inc. The name of the snack food company was changed to Golden Flake Snack Foods, Inc. The company also expanded its business to other states near Alabama. During the 1990s, the sales of the company peaked to $100 million. Babinsky retired and the ownership of the company was handed over to John S. Stein. By 1998, Golden Enterprises sold its other subsidiaries leaving behind Golden Flake Snack Foods, Inc.
