Hy-Vee

Hy-Vee Storefront in Fall

Founded by Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg, who opened their first store in Beaconsfield, Iowa, in 1930, Hy-Vee built its operations around a goal to provide “good merchandise, appreciative service and low prices.” The company became fully employee-owned in 1960 through the establishment of an Employees’ Trust Fund, a structure that has defined its identity and operations for over six decades. Operating as an employee-owned supermarket chain in the Midwestern United States, Hy-Vee maintains more than 240 locations in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Employee ownership is executed through direct stock ownership by key personnel and indirect ownership via the 401(k) plan, with the Hy-Vee Stock Fund—funded by company matching contributions—representing the largest block of ownership. This structure has allowed the company to maintain its culture, with significant decision-making often decentralized to the local store level. Unlike many peers, Hy-Vee has prioritized sustained reinvestment in operations and expansion rather than external shareholder returns, enabling long-term strategic positioning without the pressures of public markets.

Retail Formats and Where It Operates

The largest Hy-Vee stores are full-service supermarkets with bakeries, delicatessens, floral departments, dine-in and carryout food service, wine and spirits, pharmacies, salad bars, health clinics, HealthMarkets (natural and organic products) and coffee kiosks (Caribou Coffee and Starbucks). The company’s primary distribution center is in Chariton; a second one is in Cherokee, Iowa.

Beyond its traditional supermarket format, Hy-Vee operates several alternative store concepts designed to address specific market segments. Dollar Fresh offers steeply discounted products as well a range of perishable goods, full-service meat and pharmacy. Fast & Fresh is a convenience store chain focused on fresh foods and ready-to-eat meals, launched as standalone locations in 2018 and later adapted from existing convenience stores. Hy-Vee operates 221 Market Grille and Market Grille Express locations across its grocery stores, with all in-store restaurants transitioned to the Market Grille concept in 2025 after ending its partnership with Wahlburgers. The company also operates Wall to Wall Wine and Spirits, a standalone liquor store format.

Hy-Vee has three distribution facilities developed to create efficiencies across its supply chain: Chariton Distribution Center in Chariton, Iowa, Cherokee Distribution Center in Cherokee, Iowa, and Lomar Distributing in Cumming, Iowa. Hy-Vee’s largest store opened in June 2023 in Gretna, Nebraska (near Omaha), with nearly 135,000 square feet of retail space.

Hy-Vee is strategically expanding its footprint, notably with the acquisition of Strack & Van Til Food Market in April 2024, adding 22 stores in Northwest Indiana. The acquisition resulted in Strack & Van Til becoming a subsidiary of Hy-Vee while retaining its logos, name, and branding. In June 2026, Bosselman Pump & Pantry Inc. announced it would acquire 21 Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh convenience store locations in Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota.

Company Background

In 1938, Hyde and Vredenburg incorporated 15 Iowa and Missouri stores as Hyde & Vredenburg, Inc., with the company’s first president being Dwight Vredenburg, the 23-year-old son of David Vredenburg. The corporation operated an office, warehouse, mill and meat plant in Lamoni, Iowa, along with a bakery opened later that year. In 1945, the company moved its corporate headquarters from Lamoni to Chariton, Iowa, after acquiring the Chariton Wholesale Company.

The Hy-Vee name was formed from a contraction of the last names of the company’s founders: Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg, winning an employee contest in 1952. In 1957, Hy-Vee opened its first in-store bakery at the Iowa City, Iowa, store. Hy-Vee continued expanding during the 1970s and 1980s, opening stores in South Dakota (1975), Nebraska (1977), Illinois (1979), and Kansas (1988). In 1991, Hy-Vee became Iowa’s largest private employer, a distinction it still holds.

In 1995, Hy-Vee moved its corporate headquarters from Chariton to West Des Moines, Iowa, and shortened its name to Hy-Vee, Inc. In 1998 the corporation reached $3 billion in sales and the Employees’ Trust Fund was reorganized into the Employees’ Profit-Sharing Trust Fund and 401(k) Plan. In 2009, Hy-Vee moved into its eighth state of operations when a store opened in Madison, Wisconsin.

Ownership, Structure and Financial History

As a privately held entity, Hy-Vee’s shares are not available on public markets, allowing profits to be reinvested internally. The company remains majority-controlled by employee retirement trusts, enabling long-term capital allocation without public-market pressures. The largest shareholder is the Hy-Vee Stock Fund within the 401(k) Plan, with employees typically vesting in ESOP shares after 8 years.

Like other supermarket chains, Hy-Vee operates on thin margins typical of grocery retail, though its employee ownership structure has historically aligned workforce incentives with company success. The company offers competitive wages, flexible scheduling, a generous bonus system and a pleasant work environment to its employee-owners. A Profit-Sharing Trust and 401(k) Plan is generously funded with a portion of Hy-Vee before-tax profits, with participants qualifying for Hy-Vee’s matching contribution to the 401(k) Plan. Hy-Vee operates as a non-union workplace, distinguishing it from some of its regional competitors.

Product Range and Store Brands

Hy-Vee introduced its first private-label products in 1956. HealthMarket private-label products were introduced in 2001. The company has expanded its private-label offerings substantially, with multiple tiers serving different customer needs and price points.

In January 2026, Hy-Vee introduced Nothing But The Truth, a health-forward private label brand designed to meet growing consumer demand for transparency, taste and value in the better-for-you food space. Developed by Hy-Vee’s team of registered dietitians, Nothing But The Truth features products made with high-quality ingredients that are primarily organic, plant-based, non-GMO, low sugar and high in protein, with the line intentionally excluding more than 150 ingredients, including high-fructose corn syrup, artificial additives and dyes. Hy-Vee has also launched Good Graces, a new private brand with a full range of gluten-free products, offering high-quality, gluten-free items at affordable prices.

Key innovations in Hy-Vee’s operations include the introduction of curbside pickup services, with the service later integrated into the Aisles Online platform for seamless fulfillment. The company launched RedMedia, a retail media network in 2024, which enables targeted advertising across digital channels and expanded in December 2024 through a partnership with Grocery TV to power over 10,000 in-store screens.

People and Workplace

Hy-Vee offers competitive wages, flexible scheduling, a generous bonus system and a pleasant work environment to employee-owners. The company provides a self-insured benefit plan for employees and eligible family members, including life insurance, medical and dental care, prescription drug coverage and short-term disability. Benefits for long-term employees include a 401k match at 7%, great amount of PTO. However, employee feedback regarding compensation and workplace conditions has been mixed, with some reporting limited advancement and wage concerns.

Hy-Vee has been recognized for career development and training. Jeremy Gosch, now serving as CEO, started his Hy-Vee career in 1996 as a part-time clerk and was named store director at Eldora, Iowa, in 2002, before joining Hy-Vee’s executive leadership team in 2012. In 2024, Jeremy Gosch became the sole chief executive, with Aaron Wiese named president after the company moved away from its dual-CEO structure.

Market Position and Competition

Hy-Vee competes in a crowded Midwestern grocery landscape dominated by both regional chains and national discounters. The chain distinguishes itself through its employee ownership model, emphasis on customer service through local autonomy, and integration of health and wellness services. The company increased its focus on customers’ healthy lifestyles and introduced HealthMarket private-label products in 2001.

Price competition from Walmart, discount chains, and dollar stores has driven Hy-Vee to develop alternative formats and maintain value-oriented private-label options. The company debuted its website in 1996 and introduced customers to online grocery shopping in 1998. Hy-Vee has invested in digital capabilities to remain competitive with e-commerce, offering online ordering and pickup services through its Aisles Online platform.

Notable Developments and Outlook

On July 27, 2022, the company announced that Randy Edeker would step down from his position as CEO, and Aaron Wiese would assume the CEO role. Just a few months after naming Jeremy Gosch and Aaron Wiese co-CEOs, the grocer said Gosch became the sole chief executive in 2024, while Wiese was named president.

On April 17, 2024, Hy-Vee announced the acquisition of Strack & Van Til stores of Highland, Indiana, adding 22 locations in northwest Indiana, with the company saying the purchase was one of the largest in Hy-Vee’s history. Hy-Vee’s expansion into new states like Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama, supported by a new distribution center in Nashville, is projected to add $6 billion in sales through the development of 50 stores over the next 25 years.

In 2025, Hy-Vee announced the end of its partnership with Wahlburgers, converting all locations into Market Grille. All in-store restaurants introduced new menus, bringing back customer favorites from the original Market Grille menu and offering lower prices than Wahlburgers’ Hy-Vee menu.

In August 2024, Hy-Vee announced its move to a new office location in Bangalore, further enhancing its footprint in India. Helpful Smiles Technology (HST) Global, the company’s technology center, employs close to 200 people.
