Katz Group of Companies is a giant Canada-based retail company. Katz operates more than 1,800 pharmacies under a number of banners. Its main offices are located in Alberta, Canada.

History
Three of Katz’s well-known franchises are Pharma Plus, Snyder Drug and Rexall Sports. Pharma Plus originated from a chain of drugstores known as Tamblyn in the early part of the 1900s in Toronto. Snyder Drug is a pharmacy chain that was founded in theUSA, but over the years expanded its operations to Canada. Rexall Sports is a Katz’s subsidiary that is engaged in franchises of professional sports, one of which is the Edmonton Oilers, a National Hockey League team.

Pharma Plus came to be owned when its former owner, the Oshawa Group sold it to Katz. Katz bought the Pharma Plus chain through Katz Pharmacies, which operated under Katz Group’s subsidiary, Rexall. Currently, Katz is working on re-branding all Pharma Plus stores to a new banner, “Rexall PharmaPlus.”

Rexall Direct, Katz’s subsidiary, is the only mail-order pharmacy company in Canada. Being a unique business in the country, Rexall Direct is considered one of the country’s largest pharmacy operations. Another of Katz’s chain of pharmacies is the Medicine Shoppe. This pharmacy chain was established in 1972 and has ever since promoted a reputation of being “the friendly neighbourhood pharmacy.” Today, Medicine Shoppe has more than 1000 stores located in five countries in different parts of the world.

Each of the chain of pharmacies owned by Katz offers a wide variety of products including cosmetic items, diet and nutrition products, home and health care goods, pain relief products, vitamins and herbal supplements, grocery and convenience products, personal and baby care products. The pharmacies also offer products sold under its private label Rexall™. These stores even have online photo centers for the customers’ convenience.

Currently, Katz owns more than a thousand franchises of pharmacies (under several banners) in Canada alone. The company also owns Drug Trading Company Ltd. This division deals with the company’s retail support while another of Katz’s subsidiary companies, ProPharm Limited, deals with computer systems used in pharmacies. The company is currently under the leadership of Chairman, Daryl Katz.
