History
Lowes Foods started in 1954 in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, with a single store opened by Jim Lowe, and Lowe sold that store to J. C. Faw. Expansion in Wilkesboro and the mountain regions of North Carolina shortly followed. Growth accelerated in the 1960s and 1970s, with rapid expansion continuing into the early 1980s. In 1984, Merchants Distributors, Inc. (MDI), a wholesale distributor of food and non-food items to grocery stores headquartered in Hickory, North Carolina, bought Lowes Foods. When MDI acquired Lowes Foods, they operated 75 stores in North Carolina and Virginia.
Lowes added 19 more stores between 1986 and 1990. In 1994, the company introduced a new concept, FreshSmart, that emphasized a full selection of quality fresh foods, upscale customer service, and faster checkout. In 1997, MDI parent company Alex Lee Inc. bought Byrd’s Food Stores Inc. of Burlington, North Carolina, which had 43 stores. Lowes Foods had 56 stores, few in the area served by Byrd’s. The Byrd’s stores became Lowes Foods stores.
In 2000, Delhaize America had to sell 38 Hannaford stores to satisfy antitrust concerns. Lowes Foods bought 12 of these, six (plus one under construction) in the Research Triangle region and six along the North Carolina coast. In 1992, Lowes Foods, IFH, and MDI became the three companies of Alex Lee, Inc., named in honor of the founders, Alex and Lee.
In 2007, Lowes Foods opened its first fuel station at a Hickory, North Carolina, store. In March 2011, Lowes Foods opened a ‘frugal cousin’ series of stores called Just $ave. These stores are located all in North Carolina and mainly in rural areas, targeting budget-conscious shoppers. The first location opened was in Pilot Mountain, North Carolina.
On June 1, 2012, the company announced that they were leaving the Charlotte, North Carolina, market by trading ten Charlotte area stores with Harris Teeter for six Western North Carolina stores and $26.5 million in cash. By March 2015, Lowes Foods began shifting its store portfolio and had closed five of the six stores it acquired from Harris Teeter as well as stores in Cary, Newland, West Jefferson, and Greenville, North Carolina. These closures were announced as part of a comprehensive growth strategy that would include rebranding all existing Lowes Foods stores by 2019 and entering into the Greenville, South Carolina market in 2016.
In 2013, new CEO Tim Lowe had plans to change their experiences in their stores and wanted to invent a new concept for their locations that showed their “Carolina Roots”. Lowes Foods created a number of new concepts, including Chicken Kitchen, SausageWorks, Pick & Prep, and the Community Table. In early 2014, Lowes Foods remodeled their location in Clemmons, North Carolina, a suburb of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
In 2023, Lowes Foods acquired Georgia’s Foothills IGA Market on September 5, marking its expansion into the Georgia market. The store continued to operate as an IGA for the next few months and became a Lowes Foods store sometime in early 2024. In 2025, Supermarket News named Lowes Foods as its Retailer of the Year. In 2026, two new Lowes Foods grocery stores opened in the Charlotte area, with the Lowes in Kannapolis opening on June 18.

In the first year, frozen pizza sales surged by 98%, while national brands dropped 2.6%. Brown Bag is the grocer’s hero private brand product.
