Northeast U.S. Grocery Chains

The Northeast grocery market is crowded, regional, and highly competitive. A few major public companies dominate large parts of the region, but privately held family chains, cooperatives, and local banners still play an important role in many states.

The list below covers supermarket and grocery chains of any size in the Northeastern United States, along with their ownership status and parent-company relationships where relevant. Public companies are identified as publicly traded, while private chains include family-owned businesses, cooperatives, and privately held groups.

Public companies in the region include Ahold Delhaize, Albertsons, Weis Markets, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Costco, and Walmart. Private or family-owned chains remain especially important in New England and the New York metro area, where regional loyalty can be very strong.

Cooperative ownership is also a major part of the Northeast grocery landscape. ShopRite, through Wakefern Food Corp., is the best-known example, while Northeast Grocery, Inc. owns the Price Chopper, Market 32, and Tops banners under one private corporate structure.
