Richelieu Foods was founded in 1862. It was originally focused on the business of canned food production. The company has changed ownership several times since its foundation.

In 1956, the company focused only on the production of salad dressing and was then named Western Dressing Incorporated. In 1988, Western Dressing was sold to the investment group Brynwood Partners from Greenwich, Connecticut. The investment group also owned several other companies which included Balance Bar and Stella D’oro.

In 1994, Richelieu focused on contract packing and its private labels. The company sold its Western Dressing label to Unilever.

In 2006, Richelieu Foods, Incorporated was awarded the year’s Pizza Manufacturer award by the magazine Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery. In 2008, Richelieu bought the dressings and sauces division of the company Sara Lee along with its production facilities in the area of Elk Grove, Illinois. In September of 2009, the company made the feature story in the Boston Business Journal.

The company now has private label production facilities in different states such as Wisconsin, Ohio, Iowa and Illinois. The pizza manufacturing facility is located in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin; Washington Court House, Ohio; Elk Grove Village, Illinois; and Grundy Center, Iowa. They concentrate on retail frozen pizza, dressings and sauces, plus foodservice dressings and sauces.

Currently, Richelieu Foods, Inc. is still privately owned by Brynwood Partners and continues to produce more than 50 million frozen pizza products, as well as over 20 million finished pizza crusts every year. According to information from Hoover’s, the average yearly revenue for one worker in Richelieu Foods is around $900,000.

Richelieu Foods Inc. is said to be one of the companies that grew steadily despite the recession that started in 2008. In fact, the company’s sales had a significant increase of 30% in the year 2008, which is roughly about $40 million.
